St Jude Basketball Camp
The St. Jude Basketball Skills Camp is for boys and girls entering the 5th thru 8th grades. Camp runs from June 13th to July 25th (excluding July 4th and July 21st). Each day will consist of two sessions. 5th/6th graders from 10:00 - 11:30 and 7th/8th graders from 11:30 - 1:00pm. The first day of camp (6/13) the 5th/6th graders will attend from 10:00am - 12:00pm and the 7th/8th graders from 11:00 - 1:00pm.
Each day a variety of drills will be introduced and repeated emphasizing individual skills such as dribbling, shooting and passing. The main goal of the camp is to strengthen dominant hand skills while improving "off-hand" skills at the same time. The camp will also provide drills that each player can perform on their own to continue to improve their individual games in the off season.
Throughout the camp guest instructors will provide some of their techniques and lessons to the campers. These instructors include Chuck Machock, UC Basketball analyst, Andy Marx, Oak Hills girls head coach, Joe Schoenfeld, Elder head coach, and Kevin Whitmer, Elder assistant.
To track the progress of each camper, they will go through a pre-test the first day of camp, another skills test in the middle of the camp and a final skills test the last day of camp. The shooting tests will provide feedback to the campers on areas of strength and weakness, and hopefully provide motivation to continue to improve and strengthen their individual games throughout the year.
The camp is not intended to be a competition between the participants, but a resource for each individual to improve their own game and skills. Success will be measured by the amount of improvement each individual makes throughout the course of the camp, not necessarily by who makes the most shots in any one drill. Hopefully, each camper improves by the end of the camp and has a few drills they can use to make themselves better by the next basketball season.
